How to Activate an eSIM on iPhone
Paying for an eSIM and choosing the right installer on the iPhone are separate jobs. Keep the order email beside Settings: the provider's installation method is the clue to choosing between a QR scan, an app download and a plan-ready notification.
For a QR-based iPhone eSIM installation, the route through Settings is Mobile Service > Add eSIM > Use QR Code. Have the pattern from your order ready for the camera, then work through the download and activation screens. Cellular or Mobile Data may appear instead of Mobile Service on your iPhone.
There is one more job after installation: choosing which line the phone should use. That matters particularly when you're adding holiday data alongside your usual number.
Before you start activating your eSIM
Put the order email within reach and connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi before opening the installer. There's a purchase involved here as well as a phone setting: Add eSIM gives the handset somewhere to put a provider's profile, rather than a free mobile connection of its own.
The iPhone XS, XS Max and XR mark the start of Apple's general eSIM compatibility list, with regional exceptions making the precise model worth checking. A handset bought abroad deserves particular attention here: its family name alone doesn't establish which SIM hardware is inside.
For a plan from another network, look in Settings > General > About at Network Provider Lock. No SIM restrictions means the iPhone is unlocked. A lock needs sorting out with the network that controls it; Apple can't release a handset from another provider's restriction.
The QR pattern belongs with your account details, not in a public troubleshooting screenshot. O2's explanation makes the reason plain: the QR pattern is unique to the account and good for a single download. Crop it out of an error screenshot, along with any written activation credentials, before you share the picture.
How to activate an eSIM on iPhone with a QR code
Open the installation email on a laptop if you have one nearby. It leaves the iPhone's camera free, with the QR pattern sitting on a separate screen in front of you.
- Open the mobile settings. On the iPhone receiving the eSIM, open Settings, then Mobile Service.
- Start a new installation. Select Add eSIM, followed by Use QR Code. On some screens, Other Options comes first.
- Scan your provider's code. Keep the whole pattern inside the camera frame.
- Finish the activation screens. Continue through the installer, using your provider's confirmation code if this particular download asks for one.
- Name the line. Travel, Spain or another recognisable label will be easier to pick out than an unfamiliar default name later.
A laptop or second device gives your iPhone something to scan.
The Camera app provides another way in: scan the pattern and open the mobile-plan notification it produces. For a brand-new iPhone still showing its welcome screens, the mobile-service stage offers a QR route too, before the rest of setup is finished.
When the QR code is on the same iPhone
Apple added a useful shortcut for this situation in iOS 17.4: touch and hold the provider's QR pattern in a supported email app or browser, then select Add eSIM from the menu that appears.
No menu appearing? Your provider may have an installation link or an app download for the same order. Manual entry is another possibility when the provider includes those details, so there's usually more to investigate before borrowing a second phone.
Entering the eSIM details manually
Within the Add eSIM flow, Enter Details Manually is the route for written installation credentials. The provider should supply the SM-DP+ address and activation code needed for that installation, plus a confirmation code where applicable.
Treat the address and code as a matched set from your order, including their punctuation. Copying the SM-DP+ address from a different provider's tutorial can send you down an entirely unhelpful path.

Activating an eSIM without a QR code
A QR attachment isn't part of every eSIM order. The installation may already be waiting on the handset, or your provider may put the next step behind a link in its email or account area.
A plan assigned directly to your iPhone
Apple's name for a plan delivered directly to the handset is eSIM Carrier Activation. You pick it up from the mobile-plan notification, or during the mobile-service stage of a new iPhone's setup, instead of fetching a separate QR picture.
Already past the welcome screens? Check Settings for the provider's plan-ready notification and finish the installation there.
An activation link or provider app
An activation link takes you into the installer from your provider's message; an app-based order starts from the download option inside that provider's app or account.
EE's instructions include downloads through its app for supported setup journeys. The order email is the place to check which journey applies, particularly when you're replacing an existing SIM and the account needs verification.
Converting a physical SIM or moving your number
Convert to eSIM applies to an eligible physical SIM on that iPhone. Transfer From Nearby iPhone is for bringing a supported line across from another handset.
Neither option is a general download button for a newly purchased travel package. A move of your existing number belongs in the separate iPhone eSIM transfer instructions, with the old handset kept close enough to approve the request.
Turn on the installed eSIM and choose your data line
The profile has arrived once you can see its line in Settings. Which line the iPhone actually uses for internet access is another setting, and it's easy to overlook while concentrating on the download.
Inside Settings > Mobile Service, open the installed line and look at Turn On This Line. The choice under Mobile Data, one screen back, is the package the phone will use for internet access.
Suppose the list contains Primary and Spain. Leaving Primary selected for data would test your usual line, even with the Spain profile successfully installed beside it. Your everyday number might remain the default for calls while the travel package supplies internet access. Those are separate choices in Apple's Dual SIM settings.
For a data-only package, judge the result by mobile internet. A standard phone call may belong to your home line, and its success won't prove that the new data plan is working.
Your eSIM. Your data line.

When to activate a travel eSIM
Read the package's activation policy before installing it, preferably while you're still somewhere with dependable internet.
The point at which the validity clock starts isn't universal. Airalo's published guidance gives both possibilities: some packages begin on installation, while others start when they connect to a supported network in the destination.
That difference can cost you usable days. A seven-day package whose clock starts on installation is already counting down if you install it several days before departure.
For a ZameSIMs purchase, check the particular plan and the instructions supplied with the order. A policy from another provider can't settle when your package starts.
On arrival in a covered destination, the travel line needs to be your mobile-data choice, with Data Roaming set as its provider instructs. Check the home line separately; the travel package's settings don't decide how your usual network charges for roaming.
The Allow Mobile Data Switching control is worth a look here too. Off keeps automatic data switching out of the arrangement. The home number's call and messaging charges remain a separate question for its network, including when you've chosen the holiday package for internet access.
How to check whether your eSIM is active
Choose the eSIM you're testing under Mobile Data, disconnect Wi-Fi, and ask Safari for a fresh webpage. That's a more revealing check than opening an app which was happily using your router a moment earlier.
Add a call out, a call back to the number and an ordinary SMS when those services are included in the package. A data-only travel plan has a narrower job, so mobile internet is the result you're looking for there.
Location belongs in the diagnosis as well. A France-only package installed while you're in Britain may be waiting for a French partner network, which is quite a different problem from an unsuccessful download.
Tick each item after testing it. For a data-only plan, only the data check applies.
If your iPhone eSIM won't activate
Keep track of how far you got. Support will want to distinguish an installer refusing a QR code from a profile that arrived successfully but hasn't found a network.
A rejected QR code. Earlier installation matters when the provider restricts a pattern to one download: tell support which handset received it, and ask about fresh credentials if that download has already happened.
An installed line with no signal: work through Apple's connection checks, pausing to test between changes. Apple's list covers an Airplane Mode toggle, switching the affected line off and back on in Mobile Service, and restarting the handset. Settings > General > About is also the place to look for an available network-provider settings update.
The details for support. The error's exact wording belongs in the message to support, together with the EID or IMEI recorded under About. A note about the line appearing in Mobile Service before the failure will help establish whether the download itself succeeded.
A restart and a deletion have very different consequences here. Apple warns against using eSIM deletion to troubleshoot unless the provider has requested it, because you may then need the network to issue a replacement.
Questions about activating an eSIM on iPhone
Can I activate an eSIM without Wi-Fi?
Use a working Wi-Fi connection for the installation described here. Apple's Wi-Fi-free option covers particular eSIM-only models and activation in certain countries or regions, so availability for your phone and order is something to confirm with the provider.
How long does eSIM activation take?
Your provider's estimate is the useful one. O2 says most activations finish within minutes, with some taking up to 24 hours. It's an O2 timescale, so a different provider's activation instructions should take priority for a different order.
Why can't I see Add eSIM on my iPhone?
An imported version can have different SIM hardware from the iPhone model you expected, so compare the full specification with Apple's compatibility notes. The installed iOS version is another check; where the handset belongs to your employer, its administrator can help establish mobile-plan support.
Do I need to remove my normal SIM?
Adding a travel package on a compatible Dual SIM iPhone can leave the normal physical SIM right where it is, with separate choices for calls and internet. Choosing Convert to eSIM changes that situation, because it replaces the physical SIM's service with its digital equivalent.
